It's looks like a dive both inside and out but the bento is pretty amazing. I got the ebi fry bento and my mom got the spicy tuna roll. The portion was tiny for both, but the taste was excellent for the bento. The shrimp was lightly fried and tender. It tasted like a cloud. The rice was perfectly cooked. The mac salad and noodle salad sides were also delicious but they only give you half a tablespoon of both. The bento was $13 and the tuna roll was around $8.

I absolutely love this place. Their sushi and chicken is what i order, and it's incredible. Nice quality ingredients and cooked/prepared to perfection. A lot of people get their food to go, but i recommend dining in if you can. It's super fresh and yummy.
The service is always quick, even though it's just the two of them. They're so sweet and remember their regulars. Total mom and pop shop.
The shop itself is small, with a simple look. But don't let that deter you! The food is great. They usually have a video playing of a walk-about of Japan. Gives you a tiny slice of life from Japan, which is sweet.
This is a business I'm happy to support and I love coming back every time. Please check them out!!

Best $13 lunch in san mateo. salad, salmon, japanese noodles. my goto place for many years.

Love this place, I've had in the past the tempura and also beef curry rice, sort of reminds me of my Mom's curry, parking can be a little hard still angled parking slots but the prices are reasonable, nice clean restaurant.

This place is such a gem because of its affordable prices and good quality food. It has a more casual vibe and would be a good place for a quick bite to eat. I came by for dinner with a friend on a Friday night and street parking was easy to find. The restaurant is small but it wasn't busy so we got seated right away. I got the Chicken Karaage Curry, it was only $12 and the portion size was perfect. The curry sauce did not have any potatoes or carrots in it but the dish still felt complete with the amount of chicken it came with, and also the side salad. Would definitely come back and try the sushi or bento boxes!

Love this place! Great home cooking and wonderful owners! Fast, tasty, and cheap eats with integrity for food. Hits: salmon teri bento- grilled well and generous size, curry rice with katsu (chicken or pork-crispy, hot, and juice), karage, tempura- all hot and crispy. Rolls- ca, dragon, futomaki- others are yummy! Dessert- gotta get their sesame balls- pipping hot and Sakura mochi. Brown rice available.
Namaqualand chicken was good with a Mayo like sauce- but like karage more bc of volume of chicken.
Small place, few tables. Parking is ok depending on time- day. But can find, just gotta walk a block. Lovey, lovey owners.

Another trip to San Mateo lands another trip to Kobeya. One of the few standing establishments left in the area which provide excellent food, service and consistency. Switched it up tonight and had tempura and chicken teriyaki bento, both items were top of the line. Finished dinner with sesame desert, excellent.

Best ramen ever! They only have one but it's done right. Pork broth, perfectly cooked noodles and the tastiest generous portion of pork on top. The beauty of this soup is that it wasn't salty, most ramens are. My husband had the teriyaki salmon which was cooked to perfection.

We went for lunch and tried the ebi fry curry, chicken karaage curry, teriyaki chicken, and California roll. Everything was delicious and PERFECTLY cooked (moist and crispy and flavorful). My favorite was the chicken karaage :)
Overall a great meal at a good price and good service, so will be coming back soon!

We love this place and SO GLAD we found it after moving to San Mateo. Don't let the unassuming appearance dissuade you from checking it out. Entree portions are thoughtful and the seasoning just right. Food is not overly greasy or salty, and a testament to the quality that goes into their food and preparation. We have thus far tried their bento meals and ramen, and they are now firmly entrenched on our takeout list. The staff is super friendly as well. Highly highly recommend this place.
